The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is an annual merit-based award to recognise individuals or research teams residing in Hong Kong or Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao) who have made outstanding scientific discoveries and their translation into practical applications with significant economic and societal impact. Winners are selected in three categories – Life & Health; New Materials & New Energy; and Advanced Manufacturing with up to five persons or teams receiving awards per category.

This non-governmental merit-based prize celebrates scientific research with global impact while encouraging young scientists to pursue their studies in Hong Kong. Winners receive a monetary prize and the opportunity to conduct their research in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Prize is awarded to young academics for their contribution in advancing Hong Kong scholarship and research and engaging with mainland China and the wider region. The prize is sponsored by the Bank of China and endorsed by renowned scientists.

In addition to the monetary prizes, winners will benefit from enhanced international visibility and top-tier media coverage. They will also gain access to world-class facilities at HK University and expand their network of potential collaborators. This is a unique chance to shape Hong Kong’s role on the world stage!

The prize was established in honour of the late Professor Wang Gungwu, a philanthropist and education advocate. It is a unique opportunity for students to explore history passionately and achieve academic excellence, while contributing to Hong Kong’s research and scholarship, engagement with mainland China and the wider region.

This year, the jury chose 10 finalists from over 70 nominations. Their achievements include a wide range of activities from community service to activism, such as the establishment of shelters for homeless adults and campaigning against human trafficking. They have devoted themselves to fighting for social justice, often at great personal cost.

The Hong Kong Prize is open to students from Southeast Asia, mainland China and the rest of the world.
