Hong Kong has a rich culture and history, and the city’s art scene is vibrant. Its museums and galleries exhibit everything from ancient Chinese bronzes to contemporary works by local artists. The city also hosts a number of competitions for art lovers, such as the Hong Kong Prize, which seeks to recognize excellence in painting and digital graphics. In addition to recognizing the talents of young people, these events help raise awareness of social issues and promote public interest in art.
This year, the Hong Kong prize will reward a total of five winners. The winners will receive HK$300,000 each. The first winner will be Jimmy Lai for his “steadfast dedication to protecting freedoms in Hong Kong and campaigning for democracy.” Four others — Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, Gwyneth Ho, and Joshua Wong — were nominated for their efforts to promote human rights.
The 2023 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards attracted over 70 teams from close to 50 secondary schools. Under the guidance of a teacher, each team selected a mathematics topic and conducted research. The results were submitted in the form of a written report. The top 15 teams were invited to present their research reports in person to the Scientific Committee, which comprised renowned scholars and educators. They were assessed according to the relevance of the theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis, citation of bibliography and footnotes, and overall assessment of quality.
This award is intended to encourage research on important global issues and enhance Hong Kong’s role in international development. Participants must submit innovative ideas on a project that demonstrates the potential to make a difference in global issues and contribute to Hong Kong’s future role as a leading regional economy. The project should be a collaboration between scientists, researchers or academics from Hong Kong and one or more other countries.
Winners will be invited to join an exclusive art activity organised by HKKMoA and may apply for scholarships with Wharf to continue their study in the field of arts. In addition, the Champion, First Runner-up and Second Runner-up will each receive a shopping voucher. Those who are interested in participating can find more information on the official website of the competition.
To ensure the fairness of the lottery, a number of measures are put in place to prevent any manipulation or fraud. For example, employees with HKJC’s security and customer service departments regularly check all items used in the draw, including the boxing, labeling, and transportation of balls. The balls and the draw machine are also weighed, measured, and X-rayed on a regular basis.
The winning tickets are determined by a computer program based on the numbers and symbols of each entry. Ticket numbers are not released before the drawing, and no one can see who has won until the prize is awarded. Proceeds from the lottery go towards various taxes and causes in Hong Kong. The government has made a commitment to allocate at least 54% of the total lottery proceeds to education.
