Domino (Movie Review)

Domino is a game played by placing dominoes edge to edge on a flat surface so that they all rest on top of each other. A player then takes turns taking one domino at a time and playing it so that its adjacent face is touching or forms some specified total value. Each domino has a particular color or symbol on its edge to help identify which side it is facing up. When a player completes a set of dominoes, they win. The beauty of domino is that one small movement can affect the whole of the setup. This concept translates well to student learning, where compensating for a learning challenge can impact the learner’s ability to master that skill.

A psionic mutant, Domino (Dominique Dupree) has the ability to create a psionic aura around herself that alters probabilities and causes her to receive “good luck” while making her opponents suffer from “bad luck.” She is also capable of causing equipment to malfunction by simply touching it.

Domino has used her powers to track and fight mutant rights violators, including John Sublime’s cyborg Third Species movement. She’s fought alongside the X-Men, and she’s even gone undercover as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, working with Danielle Moonstar to prevent the government’s Operation Zero Tolerance forces from exposing her mutant allies to anti-human research.

She’s also a member of Cable’s new black ops team, X-Force, and she’s aided Wolverine in his quest to find the Weapon X program and its secret Neverland base. Domino’s skills have made her a formidable force to be reckoned with, and she’s even had the ability to make weapons fire randomly, which is a big advantage in a fight against mutant assassins like Blockade, whom Cable vengefully wiped out of existence.

While Domino’s abilities are quite impressive, they aren’t always reliable. In fact, her luck can be just as fickle as the physics of the game, and there are times when even her most powerful powers fail to save her.

Domino’s psionic aura and her ability to manipulate probabilities often lead her into dangerous situations. She’s lost a lot of friends, and she’s been seriously injured on more than one occasion. She once had to be rescued from the clutches of Ekaterina Gryaznova, who implanted her with a neural inhibitor that prevented her from using her powers. This was a reversal of her own actions, in which she had accidentally destroyed the robot that Gryaznova was piloting through a long-distance cybernetic link. Eventually, Domino found a way to overcome this inhibitor by reactivating the psionic aura from her unconscious state. Then she was able to use her powers and escape from the prison facility. The reactivation also caused her to lose her ability to create good luck for herself and her opponents. This would prove to be crucial later on.
