Each year, the University offers a range of literary prizes in a number of different categories. The majority of these are for the submission of a piece of written work, usually an essay or poem, on a selected topic. In some cases, the University reserves the right not to award a prize if the work is judged to be inadequate in quality. Applicants for prizes must provide a copyright release form and may be required to submit their work under a pseudonym if desired.
There are a number of prestigious literary awards in the United States, some of which have long histories dating back to bequests received at the beginning of the 20th century. Almost all literary prizes require an application and the submission of a piece of written work on a subject chosen by the judging panel. In many cases, the work will be submitted under a pseudonym and will be published in Overland.
Moreover, there are a few scholarly prizes in the field of history. The Society for the History of Technology, for example, awards the Sidney Edelstein Prize annually for an outstanding scholarly book in the history of technology. The 2023 winner was Stephan Miescher for A Dam for Africa: Akosombo Stories from Ghana (Indiana University Press, 2022).
Other prestigious literary awards include the Pulitzer Prize, which is given to an individual writer for a distinguished body of work. The Nobel Prize is a prestigious international prize for literature, awarded to writers who have produced “works of exceptional merit.” In the past, the Nobel Prize has been given to authors such as Franz Kafka and Ernest Hemingway. The Booker Prize, on the other hand, is a British award for fiction. The judges for the Nobel Prize are chosen by a group of eminent literary scholars and academics.
